In 2006, Beyoncé talked to Oprah about how she used a juice diet to lose 20 pounds. It was an emergency situation– the casting directors said that they would choose someone else for the Dreamgirls role unless she could find a way to slim down.
Desperate to lose the weight, Beyoncé started an all-juice diet– and almost destroyed her health in the process.
Juice alone cannot sustain you for long. Humans need solid food. A short juice fast is sometimes okay, but only if you are extremely cautious and alert your doctor about what you plan to do.
Luckily for us all, Beyoncé got through her diet without acquiring any long term health problems. In a recent interview, Beyoncé said that she still loves juicing– but she advised her fans against trying all-juice diets.
Beyoncé’s favorite juice ingredient? Believe it or not– it’s kale!
What’s So Great About Kale?
Much like Beyoncé herself, kale is a superstar. Pound-for-pound, kale is one of the most nutrient rich vegetables on the planet. A single cup of this leafy bad boy contains six times the daily recommended amount of vitamin K. Kale also contains vitamins A, C, B1, B2, B3 and B6 as well as essential minerals like copper, potassium, magnesium, manganese and even calcium.
Guess how many calories is contained in one cup of kale? Only 33. An average person can burn off 33 calories just by jogging for two minutes.
Listed below are two kale-based juice cocktails that we created to celebrate Beyoncé’s super stardom.
Beyoncé Inspired Green Juice Recipe #1: All the Single Kale-ies
- 1 cucumber
- 3 stalks of celery
- 7 kale leaves
- 1/2 organic lemon (rind included)
- 2 thumbs of ginger
Ginger co-stars in this tasty kale-based recipe. If you’re not familiar with the amazing health benefits of ginger, you should get to know this root. A 2009 study that appeared in The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine proved that ginger was just as effective as ibuprofen in relieving pain in women suffering from menstruation cramps.
We hope you like a bit of spice in your juice, because the large amount of ginger in this drink will definitely light up your mouth. On the other hand, ginger’s anti-viral properties will also prevent you from coming down with a full-blown cold if you wake up with the sniffles in the morning.
Beyoncé Inspired Green Juice Recipe #2: Me, Myself and Kale
- 4 stalks of organic kale
- 1 pear
- 1 banana
- 1/2 organic lemon (rinds included)
- 1 avocado
- 2 stalks of celery
- 1 cup of coconut water
For this recipe we included an avocado in the mix to smooth out the texture of the drink and balance out the bitter taste of kale. Like kale, avocados are packed full of vitamins and minerals. Avocados contain healthy fats and tons of fiber to keep the edge off your appetite.
A recent study supported anecdotal evidence that avocados curb food cravings. Scientists asked a group of people to eat a meal that contained avocado. Another group ate a similar but avocado-less meal that had just as many calories. The group that ate avocado felt fuller and didn’t eat as much food later on in the day.
